Despite Pressure from Trump and Musk, the House of Representatives Reintroduces Temporary Funding Plan
The House of Representatives, controlled by Republicans, rejected a temporary funding plan supported by President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday, just a little over 24 hours before the U.S. government was set to shut down. This marked an extraordinary two-day period in Washington testing the limits of the new president's power.
Trump and key advisor Elon Musk pressured GOP lawmakers, particularly with threats of challenges against them in upcoming elections, to abandon the previous bipartisan agreement. Trump asked Republican leaders to add a provision to the legislation that would suspend or increase the federal debt ceiling before taking office.
However, despite the support of the world's richest man and the president-elect, the bill was defeated with 235 votes against 174, as 38 Republicans voted against it. Almost all Democrats also opposed this spending package, which would suspend the debt ceiling for two years.
