EU Leaders to Send 'Clear Message' to Trump on Ukraine
Forex - European Union leaders aim to send a "clear signal" of continued support for Ukraine to elected U.S. President Donald Trump at their summit today.
During the summit, EU leaders will also address the security and economic challenges arising from Trump’s return to the White House.
According to a draft communiqué, leaders will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the beginning of their discussions in Brussels and reaffirm their "unwavering determination" to support Ukraine "for as long as it takes."
Trump has repeatedly called for an end to the war, which has been ongoing for nearly three years. On Monday, he stated that Zelensky should be ready to reach a peace agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin, although he did not clarify whether this would mean Kiev conceding territory to Moscow as part of a negotiated solution.
The draft EU communiqué states, "Russia must not prevail," and adds that no initiatives regarding Ukraine should be undertaken without Kiev’s involvement. One EU diplomat described the draft text as a "clear signal to the U.S."
