Biotrend Energy Unveils Its First Sustainability Report to Stakeholders
Foreks - Biotrend Energy has been contributing to sustainable development since 2017 by providing solutions that benefit the environment, society, and economy with a mission to convert waste into value. In line with its goal of investing in alternative energy and making a difference through technological innovation, Biotrend Energy recently presented its first sustainability report to its stakeholders.
Biotrend Energy continues to take significant steps in combating climate change while adhering to sustainability and circular economy principles. The company is fighting climate change in alignment with Turkey's net-zero emission target for 2053, leading the industry by investing in low-carbon technologies, supporting the transition to a circular economy, and effectively utilizing green financing sources.
Sustainability-Focused Initiatives Ilhan Dogan, Chairman of Biotrend Energy, stated, “At Biotrend Energy, we see sustainability not just as a goal, but also as a value at the core of our business. Accordingly, we addressed the most pressing sustainability issues of our company with a comprehensive prioritization analysis. We meticulously examined both the financial impacts of sustainability issues and the environmental and social impacts of our activities. Through this analysis, carried out in accordance with international standards, we identified the main environmental, social, and governance issues we need to focus on in the coming years; we are transforming our strategy as Biotrend Energy in this regard. Our first sustainability report, which we are sharing with you today, is a tangible output of these efforts. This report shares our sustainability performance with all our stakeholders, adhering to our principles of transparency and accountability. It also serves as an important part of our future strategic roadmap. Sustainable growth and environmental responsibility are indispensable values for us. In line with these values, we will continue to work with our stakeholders for a more livable world.”
Innovative Projects and Green Financing Özgür Umut Eroğlu, CEO of Biotrend Energy, said regarding the sustainability report, “Combating climate change is one of the most important issues of our time, requiring global and collective action. At Biotrend Energy, we work actively in this fight to leave a livable planet for future generations. In 2023, achieving a revenue of 2.3 million USD from carbon credits, we took further significant strides in sustainable financing. In line with our innovative projects and circular economy strategy, we continue to support emission reductions both locally and globally. Sustainable and innovative approaches in the agricultural sector are gaining increasing importance for global food security and environmental sustainability. We established SİVERA, Turkey's first modern glass greenhouse heated by energy derived from waste, at our Sivas facility. This greenhouse has the potential to produce 2,000 – 2,500 tons of cluster tomatoes using heat generated from waste-to-energy production. Additionally, it offers a biocircular economy-based production process in line with the European Union's "From Farm to Fork" strategy. We introduced SİVERA tomatoes to the local market in our first harvest and also exported them, bringing an innovative value to Turkish agriculture. Furthermore, Biotrend Energy has established a corporate governance framework based on transparency, accountability, and responsibility to build a sustainable future. The Board of Directors is the highest body responsible for the governance of sustainability across our organization, and sustainability performance indicators and climate-focused risks and opportunities are presented to the board every three months. With our first sustainability report published this year, we believe that transparently sharing our environmental, social, and governance performance will enable us to take strong steps together toward achieving our sustainability goals.”
Focusing on Circular Economy and Renewable Energy Biotrend Energy enhances resource efficiency through investments in waste management and renewable energy while adhering to the principles of circular economy. Its investments in waste-to-energy production and recycling processes not only reduce negative environmental impacts but also respond to Turkey's energy needs with renewable sources.
Biotrend aims to process 118,000 tons of plastic waste annually through the large-scale recycling facility established in Izmir, producing 55,000 tons of pyrolysis oil. This initiative will both protect the environment by reducing naphtha usage and contribute to a sustainable circular economy.
Sustainable Growth through Green Financing With the increase in green financing sources, Biotrend Energy has accelerated its sustainable investments. In 2023, it successfully sold 100 million TL worth of sustainable rental certificates in Turkey's capital markets. The green financing sources obtained from Turkey's capital markets in 2023 have made significant contributions to the company's growth strategies.
Increasing Efficiency through Technological Advancements Biotrend Energy maximizes the efficiency of its biogas facilities by utilizing the latest technology. Through advanced fermenters, digital tracking systems, and specialized software, it produces more energy while causing less harm to the environment.
