Volkswagen Strikes Out in Union Negotiations

Volkswagen AG is currently engaged in intense negotiations with employee representatives regarding proposed layoffs and factory closures, with little indication of reaching an agreement. The discussions, which entered their second day on Monday, include Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer and Chief of Human Relations Gunnar Kilian, who are expected to inform the group's management board that an agreement is unlikely in the near future.

The ongoing talks in Hanover are scheduled to continue late into Tuesday night. If significant progress is not made by Wednesday morning, the IG Metall management board is prepared to consider voting on 24-hour strikes at Volkswagen factories in January. This follows two instances earlier this month where thousands of VW workers left their jobs to protest the management's proposed cuts. Both sides had hoped to reach an agreement by Christmas, but the complexity of the negotiations, intertwined with wage talks and the company’s five-year planning, suggests that this goal may be overly optimistic.
