Lamborghini Delays Launch of First Electric Vehicle to 2029

Italian luxury sports car manufacturer Lamborghini has reaffirmed its commitment to producing vehicles in Italy and announced plans to launch its first electric model in 2029. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann emphasized the company's strategy during a press conference held at the headquarters in Sant'Agata Bolognese on Monday. According to Winkelmann, the luxury sports car segment is not yet ready for full electrification, justifying the 2029 date for its first electric vehicles (EVs).

The automaker, which operates under the Volkswagen Group, had previously indicated that its first EV would be released in 2028. In contrast, Lamborghini's Italian competitor Ferrari is preparing to launch its first EV in the first quarter of next year. Winkelmann highlighted that the market for Lamborghini's vehicle category would not be ready for electric options as early as 2025 or 2026.

This year, Lamborghini transitioned to a hybrid model lineup with the introduction of the Urus SE SUV, Revuelto, and the newly unveiled Temerario sports car. The base price of the Temerario, excluding value-added tax, is over €300,000.

The CEO noted that Lamborghini is not rushing into electrification, citing the regulatory environment in the European Union as a partial reason. The EU will review the ban on the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles starting in 2035 in 2026, which may provide more clarity on the future of synthetic fuels, an area of interest for Lamborghini.

Reaffirming the brand's commitment to its roots, Winkelmann stated that Lamborghini vehicles will always be produced in Italy, dismissing speculation about a possible separation from Volkswagen. In light of the recent U.S. presidential elections and President Donald Trump's threats of new tariffs on European products, Winkelmann refrained from speculating about potential business impacts but made a clear statement regarding the brand's manufacturing loyalty: "We cannot imagine a Lamborghini being produced outside of Italy or Sant'Agata."
