TURKSTAT: Istanbul Takes the Largest Share of Gross Domestic Product in 2023 at 30.4%
According to calculations of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at current prices at the provincial level, in 2023, Istanbul reached the highest GDP of 8 trillion 60 billion 358 million TL, accounting for 30.4% of the total GDP.
According to a statement made by the statistical authority, Ankara followed Istanbul with 2 trillion 538 billion 686 million TL and a 9.6% share, while Izmir ranked third with 1 trillion 614 billion 161 million TL and a 6.1% share. The last three provinces in provincial-level GDP calculations were Tunceli with 22 billion 13 million TL, Ardahan with 19 billion 407 million TL, and Bayburt with 13 billion 214 million TL. The top five provinces with the highest share of GDP accounted for 54.02% of the total GDP in 2023.
In 2023, Kocaeli ranked first in GDP per capita with 516,460 TL. Following Kocaeli were Istanbul with 510,733 TL and Ankara with 438,242 TL in terms of GDP per capita. The provinces with the lowest GDP per capita were Şanlıurfa with 116,767 TL, Ağrı with 110,553 TL, and Van with 108,021 TL.
In 2023, the GDP per capita exceeded the national average in thirteen provinces.
Excluding "agriculture, forestry, and fishing" and "other service activities," Istanbul had the highest share in all sectors when analyzing the activities that constitute GDP. In 2023, Istanbul's share in information and communication activities was 64.8%, 62.5% in financial and insurance activities, 45.9% in professional, administrative, and support service activities, 40.4% in the services sector, and 28.9% in the construction sector. Konya ranked first among all 81 provinces in agriculture, forestry, and fishing with a 6.2% share, while Ankara led in other service activities with a 45.4% share.
In 2023, the services sector accounted for 35.7% of Istanbul's total GDP, while Istanbul's overall share from the services sector was 40.4%. The industrial sector ranked second with a 17.2% share, followed by professional, administrative, and support service activities with a 7.8% share.
With the chained volume index, GDP grew above the national average in 44 provinces compared to the previous year. Annually, GDP increased by 5.1% in 2023, with the highest increases seen in Şırnak at 18.9%, Siirt at 18.2%, and Samsun at 15.8%. Conversely, the three provinces with the highest decreases were Zonguldak at 6.9%, Bayburt at 10.4%, and Artvin at 16.0%.
In terms of GDP growth rate at the provincial level, Istanbul contributed the most to Turkey's GDP growth of 5.1% in 2023, with a contribution of 1.65%. Ankara followed with 0.96% and Kocaeli with 0.27%. The provinces negatively affecting annual GDP growth in 2023 included Zonguldak, Artvin, and Gaziantep, each with 0.03%.
