Travelers on Flights to Be Compensated Based on Euro Exchange Rate on the Date of Payment
In the calculation of euro compensation paid to passengers traveling by air, the exchange rate of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) on the day the compensation is paid will be used instead of the day the ticket was purchased.
The regulation titled "Regulation on Amendments to the Regulation on the Rights of Passengers Traveling by Air (SHY-PASSENGER)" prepared by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation has been published in the Official Gazette.
According to this, previously the exchange rate of the CBRT on the day of ticket purchase was used to calculate the equivalent of compensation claims in Turkish Lira, while with the new regulation, the exchange rate of the CBRT on the day the compensation is paid will now be considered.
The compensation amounts stipulated in the regulation remain unchanged. For domestic passengers, the compensation is 100 euros, for international flights that are 500 kilometers or shorter, it is 250 euros, for flights between 1500 and 3500 kilometers, it is 400 euros, and for flights longer than 3500 kilometers, it is 600 euros, with these amounts being applied accordingly.
Additionally, a new provision has been introduced stating that if flights are delayed for technical and operational reasons, resulting in the passenger arriving at their planned final destination 3 hours or more later than scheduled, the air carrier executing the flight will fulfill its compensation obligations.
